Smart toilets: the real deal.

Auto open/close lid, auto flush, auto dry — not a 2032 concept. You can buy these today, from ~$1,000 up to five figures. Here's what the category actually gets you.

The features that matter

What "smart" means, concretely

Auto open/close lid

Foot-sensor or proximity lift — lid raises as you approach, lowers when you leave. The single feature that feels most like living in the future.

Auto flush

Stand up and walk away; the toilet flushes itself. No handle contact, no "did I flush?" anxiety.

Concealed wash tech

The bidirectional loop: water hits the nozzles (pre-mist) and cascades off — built-in, always-on hygiene, not an add-on.

Auto dry

Warm-air dryer sequence after the wash — the closing act of the zero-touch journey.

Nightlight + deodorizer

Soft bowl glow for midnight visits, carbon-filtered air handling — the 3 a.m. quality-of-life upgrades.

App & presets

Higher-end models store user presets and route through phone apps/voice — optional, but real.

The honest pricing picture

Smart toilets span an enormous range: from ~$1,000 units with the core basics, through mid-range entries from brands like ANZZI (~$1,000 range observed 2026-09-30), to TOTO's NEOREST lineup — RS ~$5,199, AS ~$6,783, LS ~$8,006–$10,409, NX1 ~$11,452 (observed 2026-09-30). The pyramid is real: at the top, a toilet can cost more than a good used car.

The sensible slice is the bottom half: under ~$2,000 you're getting auto open/close, auto flush, heated everything, and a dryer. Above that, you're buying brand pedigree, advanced cleaning tech, and design.

One real catch

Install is pro territory. A smart toilet swaps the entire fixture — wax ring, supply lines, sometimes the rough-in size — and needs that GFCI outlet for power. Budget plumber and electrician for the full picture.

Not sure about the outlet? Read the GFCI primer before you shop.

FAQs

Do smart toilets need power?

Yes — a GFCI outlet near the toilet. When the power's out, you flush by… well, flush gently during outages; many models include a manual flush override. (Check your model's manual.)

What if the tech breaks?

Repairs run through the maker's network — part of why TOTO's reputation matters at five figures. Warranties vary; this is a category where a warranty's fine print deserves five minutes.

Smart toilet or top-tier electric seat?

If your bowl and tank are modern and sound, a flagship seat (e.g., Kohler E930, ~$1,300) gets you 90% of the experience. A smart toilet makes sense when you're replacing the whole fixture anyway.
